Can This Man Break Disney’s Succession Curse? It’s a little bit coincidental that a profile piece was release just before the Disney board votes on who should be the next CEO. It is perhaps to gauge the reaction to the piece and how investors view Josh. Regardless, it seems that this time around, Bob Iger is serious about retiring and handing over the rein. He talked to lower level executives more and the process is not as sudden as the last time he stepped down. It’s high time that Disney had a new fresh CEO, no matter what a legendary CEO Bob is.
Meta misread the future twice. Now they’re sitting on a golden egg, but don’t know it. Facebook/Meta is world-class in building social platforms, distributing content and monetizing it. They have proven time and again they have such capabilities. What they have a questionable record on is anything outside such capabilities. The Metaverse is a horrible bet and AI seems to be heading to the same destination. I wonder why Mark and Facebook don’t stop for a second and learn from Apple. There is no need to be first in anything unless it brings values to your customers. It’s better to be a bit late, yet deliver something people are willing to pay for.
Built to Own. If you are not familiar with the name 3G Capital, this piece is an excellent start. The firm is famous for cost cutting and zero based accounting that requires every line item be scrutinized. I also love how it recruits and grows talents.
Carvana’s Red-Hot Growth Runs on a Cycle of Borrowed Money. “Many of Carvana’s customers—like the company, whose bonds are rated junk—have less-than-stellar credit histories but want to take out a loan, which they do through Carvana. The entire business runs on a cycle of borrowed money. Instead, he handed his son $5 million and a small team from DriveTime to get started. Carvana sold its first cars to customers in Atlanta in 2013. Teresa Aragon, who was in that first batch of employees from DriveTime and is now Carvana’s vice president for customer experience, recalls working 13-hour days, seven days a week and taking customer-service calls while driving her kids to school. There are many reasons why the new-car business is appealing to Garcia. It introduces the brand to a more affluent consumer and makes the business less dependent on borrowers with lower and riskier credit profiles. It’s also a good way to bring in more decent used cars because—despite all of Carvana’s advertising about the benefits of selling your vehicle online—many people prefer to trade in their old cars at dealerships when they buy new ones. Plus, new cars need maintenance too.“

Legislature passes law capping annual minimum wage bumps, creates ‘youth’ wage below $15. It is very disappointing to see my residence state propose such a backwards policy. At a time when it’s more and more expensive to make ends meet, Nebraska lawmakers want to lower the minimum wage for youth labor and cap future increases to 1.75%, which is likely less than natural inflation. For reference, even retailers like Amazon or Walmart have been increasing the minimum wage. So why and why are we doing this?
Japan’s unprecedented project could test the limits of deep-sea mining. We can’t truly understand the value of deep-sea mining unless we run a test. Aware of the potential impact on the ecological habitat under the sea, we have to acknowledge that lawmakers are motivated to protect the national security. It’s unavoidable. Hence, I am in favor of a controlled limited test to see how deep-sea mining is. Whatever the outcome is, we should be careful in enabling authroization on a wider scale.
Brain bran: The protective effect that fibre has on cognition. “Fibre is a carbohydrate that can’t be easily broken down by the digestive enzymes. Most therefore passes through the gut largely unchanged. It increases the size of stools. It keeps us feeling fuller for longer and, as we digest it slowly, it leads to a more gradual rise in blood sugar levels. Those who eat more wholegrains per day have been shown to have a lower BMI and less belly fat than those who eat refined grains. The greatest benefits were seen at 25-29g of fibre per day. To achieve that, you could incorporate fibre into every meal and snack, with portions of fruits or vegetables in each meal. A high-fibre diet is also now believed to be particularly important for brain health, explains Scott. The presence of the fatty-acid butyrate helps maintain the lining of the gut, she says, thus reducing the risk of harmful substances entering the bloodstream and affecting the brain.”
