Weekly Reading – 5th October 2024

OpenAI’s Complex Path to Becoming a For-Profit Company. The article shed some light on the complexity of switching from a non-profit to a for-profit. Seriously, the more I read about OpenAI, the more baffled I am. How can Sam Altman and OpenAI convince investors who are very wealthy and smart to ignore all the risks and take a leap of faith?

Inside Domino’s Quest to Revive Sales With ‘Emergency Pizza’. An idea that sounds straightforward and simple, but it took Domino’s Pizza two years to create, plan and prepare. Even then, there was a lot of work going into IT setup, plugging loopholes, communicating to franchisees and measuring results.

Why Stellantis, Owner of Chrysler, Jeep and Ram, Is Struggling. This article explains why Stellantis is in trouble. Inability to read the market signals, failure to price to value, lack of a true product strategy and unrest among dealers are among the challenges that the CEO has to overcome.

Amtrak’s New Marketing Strategy: It’s Not a Train, It’s a Hotel on Wheels. Amtrak is heading to the right direction. I think people are interested in trying out trains as an alternative to long drives and flights. The observation decks on Amtrak trains are really nice and quite often, the fares are pretty affordable. The problem; however, is that the experience leaves so much for desire. I rode Amtrak trains twice and both times, I wish like hell that there had been free Wifi and better food. Those two things will undoubtedly help improve the customer experience.

Amazon and Temu’s New Battleground: Winning Over Sellers. Bezos famously said “Your margin is my opportunity”. Temu is trying to do exactly what Amazon did to many others. And they can be a threat here. Temu can pour money on building the seller base, but it’s only one part of the puzzle. The other piece is consumers. Do they know about Temu enough? Do they shop on Temu regularly enough? Merchants care about sales the most. They only work with Temu if the site can bring business. Consumers care about low prices, fast delivery and convenience. Temu can subsidize merchants to generate low prices in the beginning, but for how long? Plus, building an Amazonesque logistics network is no small feat. Regardless, I learned how to underestimate the will and might of Chinese companies.

America’s Young Men Are Falling Even Further Behind. The whole thing sounds to me like our educational system fails to teach young men how to enter the adult life. Sad and concerning.

High-intensity interval training and cognitive function in older adults: promising but limited findings. Whatever your age, if your training regime doesn’t have high-intensity interval training, add it. While there is no definitive proof on what it brings, if done right, it can’t hurt.

The Truth About Tuna. “If I were to tell someone one thing, and they wanted to know how to eat sustainable tuna, go with pole-and-line-caught or troll-caught,” said Andre Boustany, a fisheries biologist with the Monterey Bay Aquarium who advises its seafood guides. A can of sustainable tuna fish will say something about how the animals were fished — by pole and line, by “troll” or “free school.” This means that steps were taken to catch only the tuna as opposed to everything swimming nearby, and that the fisheries were most likely well managed. If your primary concern is mercury, the tuna’s species matters even more. Bluefin and bigeye tend to have the most. Skipjack is your safest choice, while albacore (often labeled “white”) and yellowfin probably have more mercury. Cheaper “light” tuna is often a combination of skipjack and albacore, so shop carefully.

In a Florida Town Ravaged by Storms, Homeowners All Want to Sell. It is a big deal, at least for me, to live somewhere that I won’t have to deal with natural disaster. Like ever. Let alone almost every year like residents in Florida do. The beaches, the weather and the parties can be nice most of the time, but when a catastrophe strikes, it leaves so much damage and financial ruins behind. Not worth it.

The Fight to Save Chile’s Glorious White Strawberry. I didn’t know about the mother of the modern strawberry. It is a shame that white strawberry is at the brink of extinction. I hope Chile will be able to not only save it, but also make it thrive again.
